Mata and Grifone are two characters linked to the birth of the city of Messina. According to legend, Grifone, a cruel Saracen giant, settled in the area for the first time. The love for Mata changed the nature of the cruel giant who finally converted to Christianity. From their union numerous children were born who today represent the inhabitants of Messina. During the festival the two giants on horseback are carried in procession. Following there are many Sicilian folk music groups, faithful and tourists.
